Mounder, the project that started as a handful of pop songs created by Graham Scott
McCullough and later refined by Andy Hofer, was “born” in Uptown, Minneapolis in fall of 2017. A few weeks worth of demos sent between Graham and Andy culminated in the
church attic studio of Leo Strei, where Graham, Andy, Leo, Karl Markgraf, Pat Keen,
and Dave Power recorded the songs that would later become the “Brightly Lit EP” –
released in 2018. Though Graham never stopped writing songs for Mounder, plans for a
second record were put on hold in 2020 but the band still released “All This Time” as a
single in July of the same year.
Every member of this Minneapolis-based group has been playing music together (either
in the same band or on the same bill) since the early 2000’s when they all lived in Eau
Claire, WI. This commonality of roots comes through in the creative process as old
songs and old names are remembered and riffed on.
Mounder’s sophomore release draws inspiration from unrest, mania, gratitude,
Minneapolis, and Eau Claire. McCullough started writing these songs immediately after
the release of “Brightly Lit” but the songs shifted, settled, and changed with the years
following 2018. In November of 2021, Mounder met again in a studio in North
Minneapolis to flesh out the 6 tracks that would become Breakers.
Produced by Dex Wolfe, Breakers is a shiny collection of pop songs rooted in anthemic
choruses and a 90’s rock upbringing. The opening track beckons to the listener with a
catchy synth riff moments before exploding into a chorus of guitars and technical drum work. The verse ascends into a sound of triumph that contrasts with the lyrics of self-
reflection and uncertainty. “Can’t say how I feel but I’m NOT not okay'” is as good as it gets at times. As the Blink-182-esque guitar riff provides a moment of contemplation
near the end… the band breaks it down with a surprise to stick the landing.
The first single, NOT NOT OK, is out now! The full relase is available Friday, October 7th.
