After buzzing around open mics and house shows in Eau Claire with a utility belt of heartfelt acoustic pop tunes, Wisconsin’s own Caitlin McGarvey is finally debuting her solo recorded material in the form of the Bigger EP. These are four songs polished by McGarvey’s engaging live show over the last couple years, and was recorded at Pine Hollow Studio and Toy Car Studio in Eau Claire with engineers Evan Middlesworth and Justin Green, respectively.
McGarvey’s been singing and playing music since she was 13 years old, in different forms. Most recently, she’s honed her style at local open mics, and released dozens of covers on her YouTube channel and Soundcloud account. Bigger showcases the young songwriter’s knack for penning infectious pop hooks paired with lyrics that reflect on the nostalgic pangs of loss, the pressing darkness of regret, and the compelling thrills of love. Bigger finds McGarvey grappling with these themes – attempting to slash the overgrowing brush and establish a strong path forward.
The production of Bigger takes her solitary songs into the clouds with live strings, bass, drums, deft harmonies, and a tasteful amount of reverb – truly taking these songs and the emotions bottled within to bigger heights and bigger depths. Bigger is a lucid sign of what’s possible with enough perseverance, patience, friends and collaborators.
McGarvey says: “Bigger is a fairly self-explanatory EP in that everything about it is bigger. It’s something that no one has ever heard from me before; there are bigger sounds, bigger harmonies and bigger emotions. The improvisational components in the writing and recording process made for a truly unique musical experience. It was exhilarating to just throw everything at the wall and find the beauty in the chaos. It’s vulnerable and empowering all at once in a way I think people really relate to as it follows a narrative story through heartache and discovery.”
McGarvey is independently releasing Bigger to the world on March 17 with her full band at a release show in downtown Eau Claire at The Plus, joined by D. Janakey and Savannah Smith. Doors open at 7pm with a $3 cover.
